Big Words Being Abolished

        This article is about how big words are being eliminated from a person's everyday vocabulary. Nowadays people are online more than half the day. People are sending texts or tweeting, but in those texts or tweets people shorten words or use a very elementary vocabulary. By people doing this online it starts to take an affect with the persons speech. People don't talk elegant or smart anymore they take the easy way out. Also in the article it talks about people who talk using a strong vocabulary getting downgraded for the way the talk.

        I honestly think this is outrageous. Using a strong vocabulary is important. You don't want someone to think that you are dumb. Back in the day when people didn’t have phones, people spoke with more class and if you did that then you would be looked upon as a smart person who knew things. Nowadays if you say something smart people look at you differently and think of you as a “nerd.” At my house my dad always encouraged me and my sister to speak properly. To speak grammatically, and not to use slang. I think that is what's wrong with the world today. There is just too much slang in our vocabulary. Just the other day my friend got all mad that I use a strong vocabulary and she told me I was annoying. Well to be honest I wasn’t using a strong vocabulary at all she just didn’t have one herself. My story relates to an interview in the article, “But big words—the words that others perceive to be obscure or "fancy"—have also caused him trouble. In college, he bought his girlfriend the hair-straightening iron she had been hinting about for Christmas and told her, "I thought it was perfect for you, given your fastidious nature when it comes to your appearance."Mr. Bonneman says she threw the gift on the couch, snapped, "Well, aren't you smart?" and stormed out of the room. Then she broke up with him. "She claimed it had largely been due to my constant use of big words, which made her feel stupid," says the 28-year-old, who is chief executive of a Miami digital-design agency( Ramin)”. I think this story is crazy, but If she couldn’t deal with his big words then he should find someone who doesn’t care. Someone who will love him big words and all.

         This relates to my English class. My teacher has us do vocabulary every week. We are to correct sentences and also write essays. Within all this work Mr.Paul expects the greatest from us. He will not take anything that has a low vocabulary and is not grammatically correct.

        This article uses interviews and example to illuminate his article. This helps the reader get a feel for what the author is talking about. Also by him doing this it helps him talk about a wider range of topics.

Why is the Internet So Slow?

This article is about the one question that we Americans ask so many times. The question is, why is our computers running so slow? We were the first to invent the internet and we also have the biggest sites like Google and Microsoft. So why is it that we rank 42 in the world standings. In this article John also has Susan Crawford explain why we have fallen back so much.

Every time I’m no the computer doing school work or just messing around, I get so frustrated that my computer won’t work. The topic of this article could affect not only me but everyone else. If the companies fixed the the problems stated in the article the internet would run much faster. John writes about how this all happened, “How? The 1996 Telecommunications Act—which was meant to foster competition—allowed cable companies and telecoms companies to simply divide markets and merge their way to monopoly, allowing them to charge customers higher and higher prices without the kind of investment in internet infrastructure, especially in next-generation fiber optic connections, that is ongoing in other countries. Fiber optic connections offer a particularly compelling example. While expensive to build, they offer faster and smoother connections than traditional copper wire connections. But Verizon stopped building out fiber optic infrastructure in 2010 — citing high costs — just as other countries were getting to work” (Aziz, John). If the companies would just fix things problems then the internet would be much faster and we will be much happier. I honestly like this topic and I agree with it. The internet is so slow these days and everyone is not happy.

The writer of this article, John, is very organized in his writing. This organization helps stay with the topic. John also writes about what others have to say which helps get a feel for anothers point of view.

Conversations With Teenagers

This article is about teenagers and their communication with their parents. Kelly writes about different situations that parents are put through. Kelly also writes about the problems that occur when trying to have a conversation with their child.

This relates to me because my mom and I have the same issue. It becomes really hard when the screaming begins. I personally do not like when people yell at me, so I shut down. I storm off and hide. These days teenegers are a lot alike. People don’t really realize it when they do it. I’m not going to say bad things about my parents because they’re great, but it really is hard to talk to them. They just do not understand what I’m trying to say or they take it the wrong way. Another problem that my parents and I have is the awkward conversations. Teenegers just do not enjoy those conversations, so the walk off and ignore you. Kelly writes in her article about a mom trying to have a conversation in a different view point, “Uneeka Jay, a mom of five in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, relies on humor and spontaneity. For instance, when her 15-year-old son Shawn comes to the kitchen for a snack, that might be the exact moment she asks him, "You ever have sex?" out of the blue."It's really weird," the high school freshman and basketball star said during a conversation at his family's home, although he admitted he doesn't feel as uncomfortable after the fact”(kelly). That is probably a great perception to have. Just cut up and have fun. Don’t make conversations awkward.

        The author of this article, Kelly, writes in a way to explain her topic well. She uses real life examples like, “Michelle Staruiala, a mom of three in Saskatchewan, Canada, follows the same advice with her three children, ages 13, 15 and 23."I don't judge or make them feel stupid when they have tough questions," she said. "We all know growing up isn't always easy”(Kelly). I think that this method is very helpful. Kelly gives an example and then explains it well. With these examples people can relate and know that they are not the only ones.

3D printer Helps 9 yearold Matthew Live a Better Life

    There is a nine year old boy named Matthew who was born with only his palm of his hand. Matthew did not have any fingers, therefore couldn't do hardly anything until Mason Wilde showed up. Mason has always had a passion for building things. When he found out about Matthew and his disability he had to do something. Mason went to the library and printed 3D blueprints of a mechanical hand. He then built the hand, and by doing this he changed the little boys life forever.

     In class we always talk about changing the world. Inventing new things or even studying on how to build new things has always been a topic in my class. My teacher in eighth grade talked about how doing something for someone else will not only change your life but also the person you're building it for too.
     I think that this is an awesome idea. There is so many people in the world that are born with some sort of disability. Inventing a new way to change a person life is a kind thing to do. As humans without a disability, we think nothing of our hands or legs. There just there and we’re used to it. The thing is that what if someone took your hand, you wouldn't be able to do much would you? Well that's what these people think. We all need to help to make this world a better place. The article talked about how other kids were dealing with it “Every day, kids were asking him, ‘What happened to your hand, what happened to your hand,’ and I noticed it was wrecking his spirit,”(Mara). Now this isn’t right. I know that kids are going to be kids and that they really don’t know better but still. I’m really glad that this little boy is now happy and living a normal life.

Justin Bieber's Arrest

         This article is about Justin Bieber’s arrest. I’m sure everyone has heard about it since it’s all over the television. Justin was arrested for driving while impaired and also doing drugs. In this article people came out and gave their opinions on the matter. Many say that this star is a good example of what not to do. "Kids can come to an accepted belief that it's not the talent that makes you great. It is what you do with it and your contribution to the whole that defines you," said Howard. "It is okay for kids to love (Bieber's) voice but differentiate that from him being a model of behavior." (Wallace) This is a great quote from the article of why people care so much for the Justin and why his actions are now being looked at.
       Right now I am in Drivers Ed and we are talking about drinking and driving. My teacher Mr.Elmore has taught us a thing or two about the effects of drinking and driving. Not only can you hurt yourself, but you can also hurt others.
       I have never really been a fan of Justin Bieber but I know that a lot of little girls have. These little girls worship what he does and what he says. What are they going to think when they find out what he did? My opinion is that Justin is just a teenager and he going to make mistakes. I don’t think what Justin did was right and by all means not putting the blame on age. Justin is only 19 and I’m sure that he knows better. He could have killed someone or himself. I think that Justin should be in jail and that he should go to therapy if he is addicted to alcohol or drugs. He really needs to realize what he did and how its going to affect how people now look at him.

Given Grades

        This article is about how athletes can’t read. Mary Willingham is trying to figure at how to get these athletes at an appropriate level in school. Most of the athletes only can read to an eighth grade level. Mary’s main concern is that many of the universities won’t take athletes that are this low with their scores. Mary survived around 183 athletes who played football or basketball, "She found that 60% read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. Between 8% and 10% read below a third-grade level."(Willingham) You may ask, how did they get into college reading like a third grader. It’s almost impossible to do right? Well not for the athletes at UNC. These athletes cheated their way into this school. They took classes that did not exist. They paid a teacher money to act like he was teaching and he really was just giving them their grades. This teacher was charged for fraud when the people found out. 

       This has to do with not only my classes but also my school. In my school people are barely passing but you will never see my school giving out grades like candy. No, we work for what we get no matter what.

        This whole situation just infuriates me. I am a hardworking student and I earn my grades. It’s not right for the students at UNC who actually work their butt off to pass. There is people at UNC that may struggle but at least they tried. These football players have it easy. No school work, all you have to do is play football. Life is given to them on a silver platter. It’s just not right for the athletes to get special treatment. They should have to work as hard as the rest of us, no matter how good their playing skills are.

Current Event 1

This article is about how a teenage boy got away with manslaughter of 4 people. It all started on June 15, Ethan went to Walmart and stole beer with his friends. He then crashed into a woman’s car that was broken down on the side of the road. He also killed three more people. When the police took him in they gave him a drug test and found out that his blood alcohol level was throw the roof. So not only did he get away with manslaughter he also got away with under age drinking.

 

In health class we talked about the effects of drinking and driving. The teacher said that nothing good comes out of driving drunk. Even though Ethan got away with what he did, he will probably feel guilty  the rest of his life.

 

I think this is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. Just because he’s rich doesn't mean that it’s okay. I could go and do the same thing that he did and I would get charged. It shouldn't matter whether he’s rich or not, he should be in jail. Ethan killed four people, think about the peoples families. This could affect me because what if it was my car that was sitting on the side of the road. I would be dead and the killer would still out there free to live his life.

   

The central idea of this passage is that if you have money it’s okay to go kill someone. The passage states that, “Texas sentencing guidelines for crimes like this call for fines of up to $10,000 and between 2 and 20 years in the state penitentiary. But instead Couch got 10 years of probation and zero time” (Grey). This statement proves that Ethan got nothing for manslaughter. Throughout the passage it keeps saying that money is important. Grey Miller says, “He had the cars and he had the money. He had freedoms that no young man would be able to handle.” Apparently Ethan never got punished and so the state of Texas gives him pity.

New Cargo Scooter produced by Lit Motors

     This article is about a new product that is made up of internally electric power. It is called a cargo scooter. They cal this the cargo scooter because its like a car but has two wheels. This new vehicle has a seat to sit on and room in the front to put your stuff.

     This new item will probably help me later in life because I can't drive yet. The reason that it will help me is because when I'm getting a new car I want something convenient and inexpensive. This new car will give me both. It is made up of electronic fuel so all I'll have to do is charge it. Also it's probably the easiest thing to park because it's not so big. The room in the front will help out so much. The article says "Items measuring up to 22 inches (55 cm) in width or height can be put inside the square opening in the frame, then held in place using integrated tie-down hooks, loops, and rails"(Coxworth). With this statement I know that all my junk will fit.

     This will affect the society in the cities. The cities are so jammed pack full of people there's no room for cars. With this new motorcycle it will give the people a better choice of transportation. Also with all that room in the front then people can go places with their stuff instead of holding it and walking. There are many different ways that the new motorcycle can help out our society. Another way is that when people are driving a motorcycle there's only a little compartment to put your stuff. Now you can the joy of riding a motorcycle and now the join of riding in a car at the same time.

Digital Sticker Tattoos

       The topic of my article is about digital tattoos that you can put on your neck. These tattoos are not permanent so they can be removed. The purpose of the tattoos is to be used with your smartphone. You can record your voice even if you're in the loudest room in the world you can still record only your voice.
         My opinion on this new technology is that I think it’s a great idea. It would effect me because now I have this nifty new thing that records my voice. Also its not hard to carry around its just on your neck. According to this article “What you’ll be able to do with this invention – if it becomes a real-deal device – is slap it on your throat and be heard in a noisy environment as clearly as you would be in an empty room (Burns)”. So what the statement means is that when I’m in a room thats really busy and loud I could still use this thing. To me recording something with a microphone with a bunch of loud people around I have to redo the recording time after time. With this new tattoo device I want have to worry about that now.
           This new device could affect the world tremendously. Like I said before it’s not a burden to carry around. This device could help out people with certain jobs. Like for instance an interviewer. They could walk around and just talk to themselves. There's many other jobs in the world that could use this new tattoo device.

Google letting you hand-write your e-mails

My article is about how Google is bringing in old fashion hand writing with your email. The way you do this is by just simply take your mouse or cursor and draw the word. Even if your writing is crazy and unreadable Google will decipher it. This program even has different language so that a foreign person can still use it.

My opinion on this is that its a great thing. I believe that people should write more often than type. I do know that now the world is coming towards the more technological side so writing by hand will get very rare. So practicing your writing style is a great thing to do. This will affect me in my life because now when I write out emails I’ll be able to actually write it out.

This will affect the world because like I said before people will now be able to not only type out things put also write it out. According to this article “ While English is an option, it's more for complicated alphabets where drawing out a character is sometimes easier than typing it, like Japanese or Hindi ”(Kelly). So what this tells us is that really the main thing that this will help out is the foreign languages. It also said that when you write something in one language it can be deciphered in another. Some of the vocabulary that we learned this week in introduction to publication is:

• Online Predator- a commonly used term for someone use the Internet to develop inappropriate relationships with teens or kids
• Risky - potentially harmful to one's emotional or physical well being
• Manipulate- trying to influence someone to do something they might not otherwise do
• Stereotype- a popular belief about a group of people, based on assumptions that are often false

One of the new web 2.0 that I learned about is Toondoo. Toondoo is a site that lets you create comics for free. The positives about this website is that it lets you save it so that you can go back and work on it later. Another thing is that it was a good variety on the backgrounds, people and lots of other things. Theres only one negative thing about this web 2.0 and it is that getting the comic and sharing it can be difficult. It took me some time to figure it out.

A new digital literacy component that we learned this week is risky relationships. I’m glad that Ms. Payseur went over this Because now I know to be safe online. This lesson taught me about the uncomfortable situations that strangers can make and how it get out of it. It also taught me how to have safe online relationships. This new component helps me online because now I know what to do in the positions that are inappropriate, uncomfortable and not safe.

Overall my week has been great. There has been two projects given out and my stress has gone up. I knew getting into this program was going to be tough but I don't care. I've met some pretty amazing people and my teachers are great. We got report cards this week and in my opinion did great. Other than that I’ve had a good week.

This article is about post-it notes going digital. They say that this will help you organize your stuff better because it sorts them automatic. They have also said that theres is new holders for the notes.

I personally think that this is a great idea. I think this because if you sit and think about all of the people that use post-it notes and of all the paper that it takes to make, it is a lot. If people got new digital notes then we would save a lot of paper. I think that this will help me because its really easy to lose your paper and with this you always have it with you. Another thing that would help me out in my life would be the automatic sorting because I am very unorganized and I lose things so this would help me tremendously and according to this article
“Capturing notes not only organizes the ideas you’ve jotted down into categories automatically, it see the sometimes-off-kilter photograph you’ve taken and centers / clarifies it for you with ease (Burns,Chris)."  That is how I feel about the new post-it note.

With this new device that is coming out it would help the world out a lot. The world we live in today is very technology based. Everyone has the next big thing and when this new device comes out then everyone will have it. This will save on paper and it will save on time. Instead of having to get a pen out every time you want to jot something down now you will be able to do it quicker because this device is digital . This new note taking device will be both eco friendly and time efficient.

       This week in my Intro to Publication class we have learned many things. Some of the new words that we have learned in Intro to Publication class is about web evaluation. Those words include:

• Publish- to present a finished piece to a public audience
• Trustworthy-accurate and dependent
• Evaluate-to carefully examine something to determine it’s value
• Criteria-standard on which you base your judgement
• URL- Uniform Resource Location
• Authors Credentials- look for the contact us and about links 

One of the web 2.0 that we learned in this class is Prezi. Prezi helps you make PowerPoint's and organize my information so I can present it to people. The positives about this web 2.0 is that it can help you present a good PowerPoint. This can be useful when you have a project. There isn't really any negative things about this web 2.0 the site lets you choose your theme and it lets you put it the way you like it to be. There's also free pictures too so that helps me a lot.

Another thing that we learned this week was a new digital literacy. This literacy is called web evaluation , this helps me know what website to use. This is good to know because it helps you evaluate the good websites from the bad ones. I'm glad to know this new information because it taught me to evaluate a site with the right information. Some of the elements to evaluating a site is first you have to check the authority and ask yourself is the author identified and who are the audience. Then you have to check the accuracy, where they got their information, when was it published and last updated. Finally you have to see if its bias or not.  This helps me in my school life because on my projects I will now know the right websites to use. 

Overall my week has been good. There has been a lot of projects that have been given to us and there has been a lot of homework too. I like all the teachers and I had good days all week. This week went by so fast.

            My article is about making the iPhone screen bigger. Apple wants to make the screen 6 inches rather than the original four inches. Apple is trying to do this because there competitor Samsung has out done them with the Galaxy.
            My opinion about if Apple should make a bigger screen or not is that it could be good but it also could be bad. The reason why it could be good is because if you had a bigger screen than it could be easier to read. The reason why I think it would be bad is because if your screen is 6 inches where would you put it. A phone that big could be cumbersome to you. It could also be harder to hold, it would be more like a tablet than a phone. This event could affect me because having that huge phone would be hard to hold to my face when I'm talking to someone. I hope they will keep it the same as the iPhone 4 and according to this article "iPhones unveiled next Tuesday will likely have the same size screen as the current model (Gross 2013)."That is my opinion about the phone size enlarging.
            The iPhone getting larger would affect the world by having everyone with their phones out because there's not enough room to to put it in your pocket. The phone would be more like a tablet so people wouldn't have a place to put it. It could also affect the world because people will have more of a hassle with the huge phone. It will become a hassle because talking on the phone and carrying it will become annoying to some people.It also could be a good affect too, because there will be more people buying these phones because there the new thing. So this new phone size could become a good thing and it could become a bad thing. 

Blog Post 1

   Overall I've had a pretty good week at Gaston Early College. I've meet some new friends and we’re having a great time together. My teachers are really nice and even though they give out a lot of work they are still are great. There’s been a lot of new stuff I've had to learn like where to go and what to do. I've enjoyed the fun activities that the teachers have put together for us. I also enjoy my club I'm in on Friday too. I can tell that Girls Club is going to be so much fun. So far this school has been better than I expected. I'm starting to really enjoy this school and I can't wait to what's next.

Even though this is a great school there is a lot of books to carry around because of all the homework and classwork, I'm really not used to that so its definitely something different. Other than that everyday this week has been fun and there's always something you don't expect.

One of my classes that I have is Intro to Publications. This class was taught me a bunch this week. Some of the words we have learned in the last two weeks from my Intro to Publication class is:

• Copyright- A law that protects a creators ownership of and control over the work he or she creates requiring other people to get creators permission before they copy, share, or perform that work
• Creative Commons- A type of copyright that makes it easy to use as long as you give the creator credits

We have also learned some new web tools in Intro to Publication too, like Schoology and Quizlet. Schoology is a website that helps you keep up with what the teachers here need us to do, also websites and information that we need to know. Quizlet helps me with my schoolwork too by letting me practice my stem words. Quizlet offers you tests word games and much more. The positives about these websites is that it helps me do better in class and the negatives are that now everything is online.

In class we have learned a new digital literacy component this week called copyright. Copyright is a law that protects information that is your own work. This component helps me know what the rules are to copyright and how to do it reasonably. By me learning this new component it will help me do my projects at school the right way. Also it helps me when I'm online searching a picture or information.
